On Saturday, I attended the New York City premiere of acclaimed Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai's latest film, The Grandmaster. Starring A-listers Tony Leung Chiu Wai and and Zhang Ziyi, The Grandmasters is Wong Kar Wai's cinematic take on the story of Ip Man, one of a half-dozen releases that have come out in recent years. Ip Man is most well known for popularizing the branch of Chinese kung fu known as Wing Chun and for teaching Bruce Lee, perhaps the most famous of Wing Chun's adherents.
The Grandmaster comes out in US theaters on August 23rd. Check it out if you get the chance -- it's the most breathtakingly beautiful film I have seen in recent memory. Thanks to the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in NYC for the tickets to this fantastic event at the Museum of the Moving Image.
Update: Check out the Wall Street Journal's August 16th interview feature with lead actress Zhang Ziyi here.
